Dear journalists!

On Friday July 21, 2017, at 11.00am, at the EXPO-2017 Media Center, a press conference will take place dedicated to celebration of the National Day of Japan. The Pavilion Commissioner will give an up-close look at the forthcoming event program.

Beside the Pavilion staffers, the press conference will be attended by famous shamisen (a Japanese folk instrument) players ‘Shamiseni Gagaku’. Among them is the most eminent musician of the Emperor’s Orchestra Togi Hideki. His ancestors have played gagaku for all the generations of Japanese Emperors and aristocrats starting from the rule of Emperor Nara /710-794/. Togi Hideki is renowned not only as an executor: he has adapted ancient‘gagaku’ motives to contemporary music and mixed the tones of this music with jazz and electronic rhythms. In his characterful musical “cocktail”, ancient instruments coexist with synthesizers, cellos, electric guitars and contrabasses. Together with Togi Hideki, popular musician and composer Hiromitsu Agatsuma has come from the Land of Rising Sun. He is renowned not only as a virtuoso tsugaru-jamisen music executor (a traditional three-string instrument popular in Tsugaru, a region in Japan) but also a modern musician being in constant search of new possibilities for the ancient instrument.

In the end of the press conference, the journalists are awaited by a little surprise from the musicians.
